The Himalayan Salt Cave Experience

Himalayan salt is rock salt (halite) mined from the Punjab region of modern Pakistan. The salt often has a pinkish tint due to mineral impurities. It is primarily used as a food additive as table salt but is also used as a material for cooking and food presentation, decorative lamps, and spa treatments. (

Himalayan Salt Therapy. It comes in the form of salt lamps, night plugs, salt caves, candle holders, salt bars, salt inhalers, etc.

My sons and grandson suffer from respiratory issues. When my sons were younger, Himalayan salt therapy was not widely known to me, nor my area. Now that my oldest grandson is almost 9 years old, he has begun to suffer from allergies and respiratory issues since the age of around 4 years old. We have tried numerous allergy medications, albuterol breathing treatments, and trips to the doctors, including allergy shots.

Since joining Transitions Float Spa for my own medical benefits, I decided to contact the owner, Rochelle, and ask about booking an appointment for my grandson. I have read up on the benefits (l will disclose within this blog). She agreed to book our appointment. Before arrival, my grandson, Liam, was coughing and had a runny nose. He was excited though because Himalayan salt is his favorite salt to eat. I wasn’t sure to expect. I do suffer from migraines. I did have a headache also.

Tim, who checked us in, was wonderful. We looked around the spa before being seated in the salt cave. We took our shoes and socks off and we were supplied socks for the salt cave. The floor was sandy, the chairs were reclining and massaging, were given headphones, blankets, and clear expectations as to what look forward to.

Every time I looked at Liam he was laughing and smiling. He said he wanted to lick the walls. It was hilarious. There was one another client in there with us. She was in her own world. The chairs were unbelievably comfortable. The atmosphere amazing. Tim was so kind, he even let Liam take a small piece of salt rock home with him. Liam mentioned to me on several occasions that he felt great. His cough cleared up and he was able to breathe.

I am truly thankful for the “salt cave” experience. Although Liam is young, he will remember this experience. It was not only good for his health; it was good for his soul. He was able to learn relaxation techniques at a young age and the benefits of Himalayan salt therapy.

Let’s talk about the benefits of Himalayan salt therapy and salt caves:

The negatively charged ionized salt and trace minerals that are present in the cave’s atmosphere are said to naturally draw toxins and impurities out of the body, reduce inflammation, and improve respiratory ailments like asthma by clearing the lungs.

Halotherapy is a safe, modern and holistic method that adopts the principles of Pelotherapy (the Greek word for salt caves) and involves the practice of dry salt therapy (Halotherapy). In Pelotherapy, a person sits in a salt lined cave and inhales the mineral-infused air for respiratory benefits. The word Halotherapy is derived from the Greek word “halos,” meaning salt. In halotherapy, the “salt cave” environment seen in pelotherapy is replicated, and with the use of a machine called a halo generator, pure sodium chloride crystals are crushed into micronized particles, and the salt aerosol is released into the air to be inhaled.

Halotherapy acts to cleanse and detoxify the lungs, thus improving respiratory function. The inhaled dry salt removes impurities from the lungs, clears congestion, kills bacteria, reduces inflammation, increased oxygen intake, and boosts immunity.  It is also very relaxing, and good for stress relief.  Halotherapy also benefits the skin by normalizing pH, helping dermal repair, and increasing skin rigidity.

Halotherapy is safe for adults AND children.

It is all-natural, holistic, restorative, non -invasive, and 100% drug-free. (
